Pickel oder Sonnenbrand? Worauf Du bei Sonnencreme achten solltest

Pimples or sunburn? What you should pay attention to with sunscreen

If you don't want to bathe in your own sweat at these record temperatures, you can cool off at the lake and enjoy the sun from there. The raised index finger demands: apply sunscreen! The skin reacts with pimples. What to do?

The dangers of the sun for the skin: burns and wrinkles

Tanning or healthy skin? That is the real question that should move us when we talk about sun protection. In everyday life we speak of a "healthy complexion" and think that well-tanned people think that they lead a happy, healthy life. Happy maybe, but healthy? Not necessarily: The ultraviolet radiation (UV rays) from the sun, especially UV-A and UV-B, affect our skin. The UV-B ensures that our skin forms the skin pigment melanin; UV-A means that this dye changes and turns brown. You can see that on our skin just like the sunburn we get when we are exposed to the sun without protection.

But what you don't see on our skin - at least not directly: The UV rays affect our genome and are considered to be clearly carcinogenic. And even more: UV radiation causes our skin to age faster! The skin thickens through UV-B (calluses), it dries out more and forms wrinkles. The long-term damage caused by UV radiation cannot be avoided by "tanning" in the solarium: UV light is also considered carcinogenic there.

The very detailed article from the German Cancer Information Center explains the consequences of UV radiation on the skin and genes.

Well, on the one hand we speak of a healthy complexion, on the other hand we also know the phrase "the skin never forgets". We know the answer, it is called sun protection. But sunscreens have a small catch: for some, they cause unpleasant pimples.

Sunscreen protects, but not against pimples and rashes?

Our skin tends to be very greasy in some places. Especially in summer, when we sweat a lot, in combination with oily creams, this leads to blemishes:

Our pores produce a mixture of sebum, enriched with bacteria, dead skin cells and other substances to which we are exposed in everyday life. As far as known. The problem now is: if we apply cream, we will also block these pores. This increases the stress on our skin, because the likelihood of inflammation increases.

You may have already observed the result when you stand in front of the mirror after a day at the lake: more pimples collect on your face, neck, chest or back. It is not for nothing that the more greasy and sweaty parts of the body are. This is where the pores are particularly active.

Chemical substances in sunscreens are also problematic. The fear of some of them is that they are hormonally active. Octocrylene is one of these substances. A note like "dermatologically tested" is no guarantee that you are on the safe side. Because this note only requires that a dermatologist was present in the formulation. Not more. Occasionally, it can happen that people are allergic to sunscreen. However, you should have a real intolerance tested by a dermatologist.

The optimal way for healthy skin when exposed to the sun

On the one hand, there are sunscreens that are less greasy. A lotion or a gel would be an approach for you to test whether you can cope better with it: These solutions are water-based and therefore penetrate the skin faster instead of clogging the pores. On the other hand, you should refrain from sun oil.

If you are one of the more sensitive types (at least in skin matters), the Federal Office for Radiation Protection recommends that the BfS use sunscreen with physical filters (mineral sunscreen). These use small particles of white zinc oxide and / or titanium oxide that reflect sunlight away. The advantage: such creams work immediately because the white film lies directly on the skin and does not have to be absorbed. Small disadvantages: The creams with physical filters cannot be distributed as well as conventional sun creams, and mineral sun protection leaves a clearly visible white film on the skin. After all, such creams do not cause allergies like the chemical variants do. And the particles do not clog the pores, so you suffer less from pimples.

With mineral sunscreens, you should make sure that you work without nanoparticles if possible, because their effects on your health and the environment are not sufficiently clarified. It is also worthwhile to use products from certified natural cosmetics manufacturers, because they basically work without microplastics .

The best protection against pimples, wrinkles and skin aging?

Ideally, you should stay away from the sun if you want to avoid the harmful long-term effects of UV radiation. This applies especially to the midday hours from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., but also to the time around. In concrete terms, this means that cool shade is the best protection against wrinkles from the sun.

However, because you can not crouch constantly in the dark, you should protect yourself well with clothing (dense textiles all over your body and hat) and also apply cream. Be sure to test mineral sunscreens to reduce allergic risks or pimples.

When in doubt: A pimple is temporary - but the damage to your skin from wrinkles and genetic changes is not!

You have additional protection against skin aging when you are back in the bathroom after the sun: With a moisturizer for men, you give your face new, cooling freshness and thus make an important contribution against wrinkles. We have developed the Hydra Defense Cream especially for men, which helps with the effective moisturizers urea and hyaluron against dehydration. You can get the Hydra Defense Cream here in the shop .
